Warning Signs of a Failing CV Joint

Red Rock Auto Center • 20 January 2023

Constant-velocity (CV) joints are integral to the smooth transfer of power from the transmission to the wheels. CV joints keep wheels turning at a constant velocity while taking corners or hitting potholes. To keep CV joints lubricated and dirt-free, they are covered with rubber or plastic boots. When you notice a symptom of CV joint trouble, you’ll want to address it before it gets worse. At Red Rock Auto Center, our local mechanics provide expert CV joint repair in the greater Sedona, AZ area.

Symptoms of CV Joint Trouble

There’s reasons to suspect a CV joint problem if you notice a knocking sound emerging from the inner joint of a front-wheel drive vehicle or the inner and outer joints of a rear-wheel drive vehicle. This noise may be occurring because the CV joint got damaged---or just because it has gradually become worn-down. Another troubling noise is a popping or clicking sound when you turn. This could mean you need to replace the shaft assembly along with the CV joint.

There’s also cause for concern if you’re noticing vibrations. These vibrations may become more severe as you speed up, and could make it harder to safely handle your car. Because this potentially poses a safety hazard, it’s a symptom that should promptly be brought to the mechanic’s attention. And because CV joints are suspension components, problems with them can lead to excessively bouncy driving, even during times when you’re not hitting any obstructions.

You’ll also want to watch out for grease on a wheel or a tire. This may happen because a torn boot leaks grease that then gets thrown onto the wheel or tire as the axle turns.
