Symptoms of Engine Trouble You Need to Know

Red Rock Auto Center • 23 November 2022

As soon as you suspect that engine trouble is brewing, you’ll want to make it a top priority to get to the shop. If you ignore the symptom, then it could soon escalate and become much more expensive to address. At Red Rock Auto Center, our local mechanics provide top-quality engine repair in the greater Sedona, AZ area.

Warning Signs of Engine Trouble

In many cases, the first indication of engine trouble is that the check engine light turns on. When the check engine light illuminates, it doesn’t automatically mean that disaster is near. But you should still promptly visit the shop for computerized diagnostics so that the issue can be identified and remedied before it gets worse.

Another cause for concern is that your engine has lost significant power. You don’t necessarily need to worry if you drive an aging vehicle with high mileage and it has slowly lost a small amount of power. But if your car abruptly loses a substantial amount of power, then you could be dealing with a serious problem such as head gasket or piston trouble.

You’ll also want to visit the shop if you hear abnormal noises emerging from your engine. Knocking/tapping sounds are definitely concerning and can be caused by issues such as bad timing, failing rod bearings, and dangerously low oil. Squealing noises are often due to serpentine belt problems. Grinding sounds can be caused by issues with your power steering or water pump.

Another symptom of engine trouble is discolored/excessive exhaust smoke. White smoke is a sign of an internal coolant leak, which could indicate a blown head gasket. Blue-tinted smoke suggests that oil is leaking. Black smoke could mean that your vehicle is burning up an excessive amount of fuel.
