What are common warning signs of cooling system trouble?

Red Rock Auto Center • 3 March 2023

It’s crucial that your car’s cooling system is working properly so that you’re minimizing the risk of overheating. If your engine overheats, then serious damage could occur, including a cracked block. Your cooling system is made up of numerous parts, such as the thermostat, radiator, pressure cap, water pump, and hoses. At Red Rock Auto Center, our local mechanics are experts at diagnosing and fixing problems with all aspects of automotive cooling systems.

Warning Signs of Cooling System Trouble

Overheating is often caused by leaks in the cooling system. One sign of a cooling system leak is that your coolant level has gotten worryingly low. Another potential indication of a leak is that your coolant warning light has flashed on. If you see bright green fluid on the ground, then you’ve got a sign of an external coolant leak, though your coolant might be a different color like yellow or pink. If you’re dealing with an internal coolant leak, then you may see a heavy amount of white exhaust smoke, which is a symptom of a blown head gasket. Leaking coolant can also lead to a drop in fluid pressure that in turn lowers your coolant’s boiling point. As a result, you may white smoke emerging from under your hood.

You’ll also want to be mindful of a temperature gauge that has entered the red zone. If you notice this sign of cooling system trouble, then it’s a good idea to safely pull over into a parking lot. Then you can call the shop and explain what’s going on, at which point you can get guidance on whether your vehicle seems okay to drive---or if you should instead get a tow.
