Warning Signs of a Suspension Problem

If your car starts bouncing wildly when you drive over any little bump, then suspension trouble is likely brewing. With a bad spring, there’s a good chance you’ll hear clunking sounds when you go over rough terrain. Another sign of a bad spring is that your car appears to be slouching in one corner.

Sometimes, signs of a suspension problem arise while braking. With a bad suspension, it can take longer for your car to come to a full stop after you first engage the brakes. A suspension issue can also make it feel like your vehicle is nose-diving during the braking process.

You’ll also want to be mindful of a few other signs of suspension trouble. A failing suspension can make it feel like your car is drifting when you go around corners, even if you’re maintaining a safe speed. Also, your shocks will likely need to be replaced if you can see oil leaking out onto them. And when a suspension is faulty, tire tread is liable to wear down unevenly, causing bald spots to form.

Doesn’t Pass the Bounce Test

If you think there might be an issue with your suspension, you can do a simple test to get a better idea. First, make sure that your car is safely parked and at no risk of rolling. Then go to the front end, press down hard on it, rock it twice, and let go. After that, do the same thing on the vehicle’s rear end. When you release, your vehicle should only rock three times or less on its own. But if it continues to rock beyond this, then it’ll be best to get to the shop for an inspection.
