What are some of the most common issues that prevent cars from starting?

Red Rock Auto Center • 2 May 2023

When a car won’t start as smoothly as it usually does, it’s important to bring it to the shop before it gets to the point where it won’t start at all. At Red Rock Auto Center, our local mechanics are highly experienced with identifying problems that cause no-start. Then we can flawlessly fix them.

Common Reasons that Engines Won’t Fire Up

In many cases, issues with the battery/charging system are to blame for no-start. While leaving on headlights is one common cause of a dead battery, there are also several other reasons that batteries die, such as: loose/corroded connections, parasitic draws, old age, and a faulty alternator. Symptoms of alternator trouble include problems with headlights and interior electrical accessories, such as power seats and the radio. An illuminated warning light that reads ALT or GEN can also indicate trouble in this department. In some vehicles, this warning light is instead in the shape of a little glowing battery.

A failing starter is another common reason engines won’t fire up. One sign of starter failure is that your engine won’t start, but you hear a clicking sound and your dash lights come on. A failing starter can also cause a grinding noise.

Fuel-related issues can also cause problems with getting your car to start. A faulty fuel pump is one such issue. With a malfunctioning fuel pump, you may notice symptoms such as loss of power under load, sputtering/surging, and a whining noise emerging from your gas tank. A clogged fuel filter can also make it harder for your engine to start. You can avoid this problem by replacing your fuel filter every 20,000 to 30,000 miles. Also, dirty fuel injectors can cause issues with starting up. Pouring a fuel additive into your tank can help with getting rid of contaminants from your injectors.
